6 Things Most Businesses Forget to Clean

2/16/2021

Running a business means managing lots of little  details, and an element that often has been overlooked in facility management is cleaning. Maybe the floors get vacuumed and the tables get dusted, but there are certain areas of interior space that are often neglected. As a result, the workspace will appear unclean and could lead to various health concerns.

This past year has changed the way businesses manage cleaning responsibilities. Tasks that use to be an afterthought are now a priority.

To help insure that your building is in great condition , we’ve produced a list of the top 6 things most businesses forget to clean.

#1. Air Vents
During the winter and summer months your heating and cooling system is in constant usage. This causes dust, dirt, and other allergens to collect inside the the vents. In most commercial spaces, this is one of the most disregarded cleaning tasks.

#2. Stairs/Elevators
Stairs and elevators are usually where most foot traffic occurs. This causes dirt to quickly accumulate, especially in the winter months as snow and salt residue become a problem. Also stair railings and elevator buttons are tainted with germs if they are not disinfected regularly throughout the day.

#3. Light Fixtures/Ceiling Fans
Light fixtures and ceiling fans gather dust over time. It not only dulls their shine but can also cause health concerns to employees and visitors, especially to those with asthma or allergies. Additionally, bugs are attracted to the lights, and over time dead bugs can be found in and around them.

#4. Trash Cans
It seems silly to clean something that only holds trash, but the trash can is one of the dirtiest object in the building. Dust, dirt, and grime builds up quickly inside them, especially if there is a leaky trash bag.

#5. Door Knobs/Light Switches
Doorknobs and light switches are touched hundreds, if not thousands of times throughout the work day. They become dirty with dust and dirt, but also contaminated with the germs of employees or visitors. If these are not cleaned regularly the spread of illnesses and disease is more likely.

#6. Baseboards
Baseboards and crown molding often go untouched in both commercial buildings and our homes. Over time dirt will build up on the baseboards and will become difficult to clean. It's important that baseboards are cleaned on a regular schedule. It will keep the facility looking cleaner and will be easy to upkeep.

Don't let these cleaning tasks go neglected any longer. There is an easy way to ensure all areas of your business are thoroughly cleaned - hiring a professional cleaning service. At Mark’s Cleaning Service our janitorial team is ready to assist you with whatever you need.

Developing a cleaning plan for your workplace is the best way to ensure you are keeping a safe and healthy work environment. Having a regular routine, and a schedule with cleaning and disinfecting is more important now than ever, so you can keep your employees healthy and your facility operational. Returning to work in a COVID-19 world we find ourselves looking differently at the surfaces and equipment around us. On top of having a regular cleaning by either staff or an outside cleaning company, what exactly should your 2021 cleaning plan entail?
  • Disinfecting
Disinfection is the process to kills germs by means of a chemical process. The CDC recommends to disinfect when there is a risk that someone who has been working in, or visiting the facility, is carrying a contagious illness.
  • High Touch Point Areas
Make note of all the high touch areas in your building. Some examples would be hand railings, door knobs, countertops, light stiches, printers, etc. Make sure that these surfaces are being sanitized regularly throughout the work day.
  • Have a Deep Cleaning Schedule
Windows, upholstered furniture, and carpet are cleaning tasks that are often set aside, but germs and bacteria live on these surfaces as well, don't disregard them.
  • Get Employees Involved
Encourage your employees to keep a clean workspace. Provide them with cleaning supplies they can use to wipe down their desks, keyboards, and phones. Also supply them with hand sanitizers they can keep with them at their work station and place sanitizer at high traffic areas throughout the building.
  • Switch To Touchless Devices in the Kitchen and Bathrooms
Touchless faucets, soap dispensers, and towels will keep these spaces cleaner and reduce contamination from germs.

Providing a worry free and clean environment in your facility is manageable with the right plan of attack. Implementing a solid cleaning plan will keep employees safe and businesses open. Please contact us if your would like to learn more about having your facility thoroughly cleaned.

How To Wash Your Windows Like A Pro In 6 Steps

5/27/2016

Summer is right around the corner, so everyone and their mother is trying to squeeze in that last bit of Spring Cleaning. But your windows are coated in dust and pollen lingering from the late Spring. That's not a problem: we've got you covered here at Mark's Cleaning. So put the Windex and paper towels away. We'll teach a simple yet effective way to clean your windows like the pros.

Some supplies you will need: a large bucket (large enough for the squeegee), a squeegee (typically 14 inches), a detachable scraper (optional for tough spots such as paint), a wet mop, and Palmolive detergent. Microfiber cloths and a ladder are also great tools to have your arsenal (more on the microfiber later).

Step 1: Fill the bucket halfway with cold water and a few squirts of Palmolive.
Step 2: Scrape any tough marks with the scraper in a forward motion (if you scrape backward, you'll risk scratching the glass).
Step 3: Soak your wet mop in the bucket and rub the Palmolive detergent across the windows, spreading evenly.
Step 4: Begin washing the glass at a 45-degree angle using a moderate amount of pressure with the squeegee. Start at the top and snake down in a reverse "S" motion.
Step 5: Now is a great time to wipe the edges down with your microfiber cloth! It's perfect for any spills or water marks. Use a dirty rag at the bottom of the windows as it is a particularly dirty area.

Step 6: Repeat Steps 1-5 on the interior and exterior of the windows, and enjoy the fresh, sparkling shine!

Spring Cleanup Time

It’s finally here… spring!

Most homeowners use the spring season to clean up the house, going through closets and drawers and even cleaning out the garage.

Most schedule in-home necessary services, such as professional carpet cleaning, so don’t forget that important part of your spring cleaning routine.

What most don’t think about is spring cleaning on the outside of the home. That’s right. Although most spring cleaning chores are performed inside the home, the outside needs some attention as well.

Some outside areas are neglected all winter, obviously, especially for colder climates when everything is covered in ice and snow. Think about the street in front of your home. If you go take a look, you will probably find all kinds of unsightly clutter and debris.

Take a tour of your yard. Although you raked up all those leaves from last fall, it’s amazing how they seem to reappear during the winter. (Yes, you can blame your neighbors for that.) On top of that are twigs and branches that the cold winter tossed into your yard. Most likely, you will find a bit of trash taking up residence in the back of your home, where the wind deposited it all.

No one wants to wash windows but it’s a necessary task. Don’t do just the inside. Get a stepladder (but keep it safe!) and give those windows a good scrubbing. Your local hardware store no doubt has the professional-type scrubbing tools plus handy squeegees. Don’t want to tackle this task? Hire a window washing pro, call Mark's Cleaning today.

It’s spring! Get out there and shine things up..and if you need help, give us a call!

When a Pipe Breaks

2/16/2015

DID YOU KNOW that every home and business has water pipes, sewer pipes and lots of other pipes?

Of course you do, and you also know that they can leak and break and create quite a mess.

One thing that you need when this happens is a company to come to your aid — fast! When a flood happens in a home, there are many causes, such as a broken pipe, or maybe the hot water tank breaks, or sometimes the sump pump fails and the basement fills up with water. A flooded basement is not fun to come home to after a weekend away. Isn't that when it seems things happen?

Have you ever thought of turning off your water source when you leave for a long vacation? You might consider it, doing so if you don’t have someone staying at your home. Even though water damage companies can quickly put things back in order for you, it’s best you don’t go through the experience at all!

But accidents happen. When you do have the unfortunate luck of a broken pipe or water coming into your home, you can, of course, clean it up yourself. But a professional water damage restoration company specializing in flood cleanup jobs has the professional equipment to quickly remove the water and then dry out your house so you don’t have to worry about mold or mildew starting to grow.

Have you heard the horror stories about mold growing after a pipe breaks, a roof leaks or some other catastrophe? Some of these stories are true. Don’t let this happen to you. When disaster strikes, you need quick, professional and capable help.
