Prevent Getting Sick At Work This Winter

When we go to work we are exposed to a number of germs, especially when flu season rolls around. Unfortunately, people do come to work sick, and they touch a variety of surfaces while they’re there. In shared spaces like bathrooms, conference rooms, and break rooms germs will linger on tables, keyboards, door handles, and any hard surface for a long period of time. There are some things you can do to help prevent getting sick and from spreading germs to others.

Wash Your Hands

This is the simplest, yet best way to prevent getting sick year-round. In the winter viruses can remain active for longer due to the colder temperatures, so frequent handwashing should be a top priority.

  • Wash your hands regularly throughout the day with warm water and soap. Then dry then thoroughly with a disposable towel.
  • Always wash your hands after going to the bathroom.
  • Use a hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available. Keep a bottle at your own desk or in your bag to have on hand for personal use.

Keep Your Space Clean
A clean workspace can help minimize germs, especially in high touch points if they are being disinfected regularly. Help reduce the spread of germs in your building throughout the day by implementing some easy cleaning steps.

  • Clean and disinfect daily. Wipe down high touch point areas with a disinfectant wipe or another low-level disinfectant cleaner to kill the germs in shared spaces, as well as individual work spaces.
  • Stock up on the necessary supplies. Make sure your building always has tissues, paper towels, soap, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant to keep the workplace clean on a daily basis.
  • Do not have employees work if they are sick. If someone starts to feel sick at work, send them home immediately. Having sick employees come in to work means there is a possibility of them infecting others.

Take Care of Yourself

Staying healthy is possible - even during cold and flu season, but you have to put some extra effort into caring for yourself.

  • Get a good night's sleep. Try to get enough sleep every night, it is recommended for adults to get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night.
  • Get outside. Fresh air is one of the best remedies to beat the dreaded workplace cold. In the winter we spend much of our day inside, surrounded by germs. To fight this, get outside as much as you  can. Winter in Ohio is cold, so be prepared with a warm jacket, gloves, and a hat. Take a walk during lunchtime, or just step outside for a short break for some fresh air every now and then.
  • Don’t skip out on exercising. Studies have shown that of all the ways you can help prevent a cold, exercise is one of the best and most reliable.

It is important to have an active role with cleaning throughout the day, a janitorial crew can help reduce the number of germs and infections lurking in any workplace. If you need help keeping cold and flu symptoms to a minimum, call on the experts at Marks Cleaning Service. Our commercial cleaning services can help keep the workplace clean and healthy.
