Spring and summer storms aren't the only possible causes of weather-related damage to your home. Cold weather brings its own potentially damaging hazards. 1.) Turn off outside faucets and sprinkler systems.

2.) Knock off collected snow on gutters and low areas of roof to prevent ice dams. "Ice dams are formed from pockets of heat expelling from your attic causing the snow to melt. The melted snow will freeze again forming dams that will accumulate standing water once the snow begins to melt."

3.) Remember to open base cabinets on perimeter walls of house to prevent pipes from freezing. (Most plumbing is located in your outer walls making them susceptible to freezing and bursting.)

4.) The coldest areas in your home are the garage, attic and crawl spaces. (Insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing and bursting.)

5.) Leaving town? Always turn off your home's main water supply. (If a pipe bursts while you are not home the accumulated water and mold damage can be severe if left untreated.)
