Oriental Rug Cleaning Made Easy

Oriental rugs should be cleaned every 2 to 3 years, depending on the type of rug and foot traffic. Vacuuming can only clean the visible dirt, not the deep fibers of your rug. Getting your rug professionally cleaned periodically can extend the life of you rug and keep it healthy. Here at Mark’s Cleaning Service, we also remove stubborn dirt and dust. If not properly and periodically removed, dust can cause a lot of damage. Sometimes vacuuming cannot reach deep down into the fibers and remove dust; that is why we offer a full submersion spa treatment rug baths to effectively clean the deepest bacteria and dirt hiding in your rug! We first pre-vacuum your rug to remove loose soils and particulates. Then your rug is placed in our bath filled with fresh, clean water and neutral detergents. Once the rug is fully submerged under water, we use a machine to agitate with an ultra-soft brush to comb in throughout the rug fibers. Upon your request, we apply Teflon treatment to protect your rug after the cleaning process.

Water damage is a scary situation, especially when you notice all of your contents are wet. Over 47% of homeowners and business owners claim to have suffered losses, so if you think it cannot happen, keep this in mind in case some of the following happen to you:

  • Your pipes are rusting, cracking and bulging.
  • There is a freeze warning outside and your pipes get frozen from the weather.
  • Sprinkler system malfunctions. This applies to commercial businesses.
  • If there is a crack, or a hole in your gutter, severe or light rain, the water will leak down the side of the building.
  • Appliance failure such as sun pump, dishwasher, sink, washing machine, etc.
  • Plumbing supply system failure such as a leak and bursting pipe.
  • Sewer drain backs up and overflows into your home.
  • Toilet backups or overflows from faulty fill valves or clogged drain lines.
  • Water heater failures; this can happen when it reaches its life expectancy and begins to rust and corrodes, it can leak or burst.

- HVACs (Heating, ventilating and air conditioning units) issues such as moisture buildup in AC unit.
-Weather-related issues and natural disasters.

If you have experienced even one of these scenarios, calling a local water damage restoration company may be your best option to get the most benefits of a dry-out process. Waiting too long to call can result in mold growth if the water sits for an extended period of time, regardless if it’s clean water. Give Mark’s Cleaning Service a call, we have a certified technician always on standby ready to answer any of your questions, minimize the water loss, and assess the damage. We also use advanced state-of-the-art equipment to extract the water using truck mounted machines and complete the professional dry out process with dehumidifiers and air movers.

Remedy pet stains like a professional

Here's a trick that will save time and frustration for anyone with pets. Removing pet stains is pretty easy and we can help you learn.

When the little guy makes a mess on the carpet, most people make the mistake of reaching for a paper towel or dry cloth. This will actually press the stain down into the padding and sub floor, which will cause the area to leave a lingering smell that can permeate throughout the room.
Picture
Another common mistake people tend to make is grabbing a bottle of their favorite spot cleaner and drenching the stain. This will not help the situation and it will just cause the spot to grow in size, diluting the urine in spot cleaner. Diluted urine will not solve your odor problem, and the spot remover doesn't simply make the urine evaporate into thin air. It may smell better for a time but the ammonia is still present in a big way. Hot and humid summer days will activate the ammonia in your carpet causing the stain to re-hydrate itself and give off a urine smell.

It is important to understand that spot remover is made to remove the left over remnants of the stain, it's not designed to evaporate urine. So what do you do to remove the urine before using spot remover?

Picture
Here's The Tip:
Use a wet vacuum or a shop vacuum to remove most of the wet urine as soon as you find it. Shop Vacs and Wet Vacs are available in just about any department store. Extracting the stain with a shop vacuum will allow you to remove a large portion of urine from your carpet or rug without making the stain worse or damaging the fibers. Now it's time to use your favorite spot remover to treat the remaining urine left in your carpet. Just apply the spot remover and extract again using your shop vac/wet vac. If the stain remains, try a different spot remover.

An Important Note Regarding Spot Cleaners:
There are a variety of spot-removing products, all claiming to be the best. Companies often advertise their product will work on any type of stain. This is simply not true. You may be able to find a spot cleaner that works well with Kool-Aid and urine stains, but will not work on tough grease stains and everyday traffic soils because it is lacking the key ingredients to emulsify those substances. We know it can be overwhelming to take in and sift through all the different spot removing products but this is an important factor to keep in mind when battling with those tough carpet stains. We recommend a hydrogen peroxide-based formula such as Proxi "Spray and Walk Away" for any organic stains, including pet stains.
Picture
Purchase "Proxi" Here
3 Reasons To Be Prompt About Pet Stains:
1. Reduce permanent stains. Urine and vomit stains are acidic. They can and often do cause permanent damage if nothing is done quick enough.

2. Your home will smell better.  No more nasty urine odors.

3. Your home will be healthier.  Urine and vomit are bacteria-filled nightmares.

How To Remove Dust and Reduce Household Allergies.

Do you suffer from allergies or asthma? Are your symptoms worse when you are at home? According to the EPA (environmental protection agency) indoor air can have much more dust, soils, dirt, and pollen than outdoor air. Irritants found in your air ducts such as: pollen, mold, pet dander and pest infestations can cause coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and even asthma attacks?  Asthma affects one in 13 Americans, however the numbers have gradually increased over the years along with indoor air pollutants. Mark’s Cleaning Service recommends following the steps below to protect you and your family from the harmful indoor allergens and irritants found inside your air ducts: You cannot control the air outside, but you can control the air inside your home.
Picture
Picture
Your HVAC system circulates indoor air throughout your home and if you have dust, pollen, or other harmful irritants, it may be a good idea to have your air ducts professionally cleaned. -Call your local air duct cleaning company.

Source removal methods are the most effective known air duct cleaning solution for home air ducts. Professional air duct cleaning services use state of the art equipment to expulse Soils from duct walls, then vacuum debris using a truck mounted vacuum. Some companies may recommend applying a sanitization spray or biocide treatment to the duct walls to eliminate microbiological and mold growth. Despite their claims of benefits the dangers of these chemicals have not been fully researched and in most cases should not be used.

-Replace your air filter and consider investing in a more efficient particulate air filter or HEPA filter if you don’t already have one. Typically, most Hvac systems are equipped with a simple Merv filter this acronym stands for (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value). Merv filters are given a rating between 1 and 16 according to what size particulates it can filter. High efficiency Merv filters range from 13-16 and are capable of filtering particles as small as 0.3 microns with 75 percent efficiency.  HEPA filters are rated between 17-20 and are capable of removing 99.97% airborne particulates at 0.3 microns.

When you look to buy a new air filter it is important to understand the differences between the two and what filter will work best for your circumstances.

1-12 Merv Filter: (not recommended) these filters are cheap and also require to be changed once per month. Low Merv filters are not as effective at removing airborne particulates. In some cases, these cheap air filters do not fit correctly, leaving gaps around the filter causing unfiltered air to recirculate through your home. You don’t want that!

16 Merv Air Filter: Recommended for home owners looking for a balance between energy efficiency and air filtration. This filter will not restrict air flow to the HVAC allowing quieter fan performance. Generally, these filters are more expensive than 1-12 Merv filters, but don’t require to be changed as frequently.

HEPA Filter: Mark’s Cleaning Service highly recommends using a HEPA filter in your homes HVAC! In homes where air quality is poor a HEPA filter offers the highest level of air filtration. It is important to remember air filtration can come at a cost; HEPA filters can restrict airflow and actually reduce energy efficiency increasing your energy bills.

-Wipe off surfaces with a microfiber and dusting solution. This is an efficient way to remove lingering dust trapped within your home.

Picture
-We highly recommend vacuuming your carpeted floors once a week as it is extremely beneficial to your indoor air quality. The carpets in your home act as a filter, when your HVAC system builds pressure throughout your home, carpets trap moving dirt, dust and soils. Sometimes cleaning your carpet goes beyond vacuuming up crumbs and dirt.

-Get your mattress & upholstery professionally cleaned. “We live on our furniture!” Just like carpeting, the upholstery in your home will act as a filter capturing small particulates as air pressures change. Depending on traffic we highly recommend vacuuming furniture weekly. When we sit down to watch our favorite shows dirt, dust, and skin particles fall onto your upholstered furniture. A professional cleaning can rid your upholstery of irritants like mold, mildew, dust and allergens helping you and your family live a healthy lifestyle.

Changing your bed sheets at least once per week can greatly reduce allergens and sleep disruptions. Dust mites love your mattress and bed sheets; they live off dead skin cells and mold spores. Seeing that the average human loses about 1 million skin cells per day, your bed is the perfect place for dust mites to inhabit. Common symptoms of dust mite allergies include: Sneezing or running nose, congestion, red eye and itchy throat. A frequently upward rubbing of the nose is a common indicator in children. Always wash your sheets with hot water to vastly reduce the amount of dust mites in your bedding.

Picture
All of these options above can dramatically improve your indoor air quality. Taking the right steps to have clean air ducts, investing in new air filters, cleaning up surfaces and vacuuming can prevent short and long-term health risks. Your HVAC system is a closed loop that constantly pulls in dust, pollen and mold.  That is why Mark’s Cleaning Service recommends having your air ducts cleaned every one to two years. Cleaning your air ducts can remove several pounds of dirt, grime, and dander from the circulated air in your home just in one air duct cleaning service! -Get your mattress & upholstery professionally cleaned. “We live on our furniture!” Just like carpeting, the upholstery in your home will act as a filter capturing small particulates as air pressures change. Depending on traffic we highly recommend vacuuming furniture weekly. Here’s Why it Got So Dirty…

Mopping is the primary problem. Yes, mopping and cleaning should be done regularly. But the cleaning has to be done properly. The biggest mistake is using TOO MUCH floor cleaner with no rinse. Believe it or not, too much floor detergent causes a build up that actually makes your floors look dirtier.

Rinse your floor! Every second or third cleaning, you should clean your floors with pure water. Avoid vinegar because vinegar can break down any sealants that may be applied to grout or floor.

What about your dirty grout?
Those little lines between your tile can be difficult, if not near impossible, to mop thoroughly. The grout lines dip down below the tile, which causes your mop to never come in contact with the grout. Using a brush to clean in the grout lines may be required for severe soil build up. However, brushing each grout line can be VERY time consuming. One alternative is using a floor machine that’s designed to brush the tile and extract the dirty water. This can be more beneficial than mopping.

How to Keep Your Tile and Grout Sparkling Clean
The best preventative measure to help your grout clean up easily is to have a professional grout sealer applied. This is something that “should” be done immediately after installation, however, most tile installers don’t do it for you. The lack of grout sealer and improper grout sealer is a BIG reason why grout gets so dirty.
The important thing is to have your tile and grout deep cleaned BEFORE the sealer is applied so the dirt is NOT trapped under the sealer. When we clean your tile, we use a high-pressure hot water system that completely rinses and extracts the soils into a holding tank in our van. This leaves your grout sparkling clean.
And last, we use a professional solvent-based sealer that penetrates into the grout to prevent soiling. Ideally, this sealer should be reapplied every TWO or THREE YEARS for maximum performance.
You’ll get sparkling clean tile and grout and vinyl floors when we deep clean with our high-pressured extraction system.  Call 330-725-5702 today FREE estimate.

Water damage Emergency- Flood Insurance – Signs To Look For

How do you know if your house is flooded? Is it covered through your insurance? For any home owner water damage and flooding can be a scary situation, especially if you are uninsured or do not understand what to do after your house is flooded. Do you need to have flood insurance? Depending on where you live you may be obligated to have flood insurance. Congress has ordered all federal insured lenders to have flood insurance that falls within flood prone areas, but sometimes mortgage lenders require flood insurance upon signing. Always look for the following signs of preexisting water damage when purchasing a home so you can make sure that you are insured for any future possibility.

(Home inspectors commonly overlook and fail to detect previous water damage signs during inspections.) Always look for the following when making your own inspections.
  • -Floor effects (Creeks, warped or lifted floorboards)
  • -Peeling wallpaper or paint -Light brown or dark brown stains on ceiling or wall
  • -Signs of mold growth: Mold can be a variety of colors, white, black, grayish brown or grayish green some have a white and fuzzy appearance and other types grow in Black or purple spotted clusters. Mold growth can hide behind walls under sinks/faucets and under floor boards so it is not always easily visible but always check under sinks in cabinets, floors and carpets, windows and window sills, air conditioning and heating vents, near water heater or furnace, basement and garage.
  • -Unpleasant odors (could be mold from pre-existing water damage not treated)
  • -Saturated or sagging drywall
  • -Dripping water can make noises. Be as quite as possible and try to listen for any dripping sounds/noises.
  • -Check the outside of your house, any standing water may indicate signs of flooding or previous flooding

It is important to note that mold can be hidden in your HVAC system (AIR DUCTS) and can circulate in the air throughout your home. This can make you very sick and unfortunately most people don’t even find out until they are already ill! The Center for Disease Control states that mold can cause illness. For example, having shortness of breath such as chronic wheezing or coughing violently can indicate the possibility of mold within your HVAC system. Mold allergies can even turn into asthma if not treated quickly; in particular children are more susceptible to mold due to the fact that they have a vulnerable immune system. People with chronic lung diseases, sensitive immune systems, or mold allergies can develop serious lung infections. Every person reacts differently to mold, however, if the symptoms are less severe while you are away from home than mold will most likely be the cause.

If you have water damage in your home, a mop and bucket will not save your investment. Having a professional company to restore your water damage as quickly as possible is your best option. At Mark’s Cleaning Service, we have IICRC certified water damage technicians that have restored hundreds of homes. We provide reliable and fast water damage services to restore your home to its natural state from water damage.

Although spring is in the air, there is still time to get a head start on cleaning.  And Mark is the man with a plan. First, click on the link and print Mark’s handy checklist. Second, delegate.  If you’re lucky enough to have a family, i.e. unpaid work crew, assign a task to each member. If possible, break up small tasks over a few weeks.  If you despite cleaning the fridge like I do, clean only one shelf at a time. Third, enjoy being in the great outdoors on the first warm, sunny day!

P.S Most of these tasks you will be able to complete with ease, but there are a couple that you might not be able to complete all on your own, so we've highlighted the services we can assist you with in Blue.
