The Scary Truth About Your Air Ducts

10/13/2021

The monsters you should be worried about aren't living under your bed, but are lurking in your ceiling and behind the walls. Your air ducts could be harboring dust mites, insects, rodent feces and even mold. These containments and critters are then recirculated into the air in your home anytime you are running your air conditioning or heat.
According to the National Air Duct Cleaner's Association (NADCA), a six-room home creates over 40 pound of dust annually just through everyday living. A typical family generates a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants such as dust and dander. These are then pulled into the HVAC system and re-circulated into our homes.

Air duct cleaning is usually not a priority on people's to-do list. Out of sight, out of mind right? However, just because you cant see it, doesn't mean you aren't breathing it in. It's natural for dust and dirt to accumulate into our homes. We track dirt and allergens in everyday. But do you ever clean your home top-to-bottom, and then find a new layer of dust the very next day? That could be an indicator that your air ducts are due for a cleaning. Some other indicators that your air ducts may need professional cleaning is if your vent covers are dusty and dirty. Maybe there are variances in air flow in different parts of your home. If you just remodeled your home or it's a new build, lots of dust tends to settle even after construction is done. If you have pets or someone in your home smokes, this can also cause an excessive amount of allergens to buildup in your ducts.

Our customers have reported that they can physically feel the affects of cleaner air ducts. Clean air ducts means clean air to breathe. We always suggest to customers to have their air ducts serviced before winter kicks in. You will be spending a lot more time inside, and this is the time when indoor air quality really takes a beating. Call our office to schedule an air duct cleaning estimate and give yourself the confidence that the air you and family are breathing is fresh and clean.

Here's Why You Can't Get Your Tile & Grout Clean

6/17/2021

Picture
Do you mop your tile floors, but afterwards they STILL look dirty? Of course, sweeping and mopping should be done on a regular basis. But if you want your tile and the grout to look clean, it has to be done properly.  Surprisingly enough, one of the biggest mistakes is using too much floor cleaner and no rinse. Using to much floor detergent can actually cause build up that will make your floors look even dirtier. What many people don't know is that it is actually beneficial to "rinse" your floors. That just means every other time you clean your floors, to use only pure water.

So what about the dirty grout? Those thin little lines between your tile can be very difficult to clean, and cleaning them with simply a mop, is next to impossible. The grout lines dip down below the tile, which causes your mop to never even come in contact with the grout. If there is severe soil build up, using a brush could be required to clean the grout. However, using a tiny little brush to brush to clean each grout line can be incredibly time consuming.

If you want to keep your tile and grout looking clean, the best preventive measure is to have a professional grout sealer applied. This is something that should be done immediately after installation, however, most installers don't do it for you. The lack of grout sealer and improper grout sealer is a big reason to why your grout looks so dirty. It's important to have your tile and grout deep cleaned BEFORE the sealer is applied so the the dirt is not trapped under the sealer.

When we clean your tile we use a high-pressure hot water system that completely rinses and extract the soils into a holding tank in our van. We also use a professional solvent-based sealer that penetrates into the grout to prevent soiling. Ideally this sealer should be reapplied every two or three years for the best results.

If want to have sparkling clean tile floors again, give us a call at (330) 725-5702 to schedule a free estimate. One of our friendly and knowledgeable technicians will come to your home and determine the best method to meet your cleaning needs.

Get Your Home & Yard Cookout Ready

5/19/2021

Memorial Day weekend is approaching us, and it's a great time to enjoy the outdoors with your friends and family, and celebrate our country. It's always been one of my favorite holidays because it marks the beginning of summer, and it's always been a tradition in my family to go to our towns parade and host a big cookout afterwards. Like 2020, many of us are celebrating Memorial Day a little differently this year. But it’s still possible to have an awesome cookout, while staying safe. We’re sharing a few tips on getting your home and yard ready!

Prepare Your Home
We always tidy up our homes before we host a party. While most cookouts are held primarily outside, guests will still need to step inside to use the restroom or grab refreshments. Make sure that common areas in the home, such as the kitchen and the bathroom, have not only been tidied up, but wiped down and disinfected beforehand. While COVID-19 cases have dropped significantly and more Americans become vaccinated, this is still an important step when inviting groups of people into our homes.

Temperature Control
Memorial Day weekend weather is typically quite warm, so make sure that your guests are cool and comfortable. If you have not already, it might be a good day to turn on the air conditioning. We would suggest having your air ducts cleaned before doing so, as it will improve the efficiency of your HVAC system, and prevent dust, dirt and other allergens from spreading throughout your home. Temperature control outside is important too. Set up umbrellas or a tent canopy for extra shade. Also make sure you have cold beverages for everyone to enjoy and keep cool in the heat.

Prepare The Grill
One of the best parts of Memorial Day is of course the the food. Hot dogs, hamburgers, ribs, are just a few cookout favorites. Before the party, make sure your grill is in proper working order. Check that you have enough propane, charcoal, pellets, whatever you need to get through a day of grilling. It's probably a good time to give it some TLC. Let your grill heat up for 15/20 minutes and then scrub the grates clean with a steel brush. Then clean grates and other greasy build up in the grill with a rag and hot soapy water. If you have a charcoal grill, make sure to dump out any old ash.

Prepare Your Deck and Yard
Give your deck a good cleaning to get all the winter filth off. Bring out the broom and sweep off any dirt or old leaves. I like to spray it down with the hose as well to get any leftover dirt off. Wipe down your patio furniture to remove dirt and pollen buildup and de-grime any glass, like table tops, windows, or any patio doors. Washing all your windows is a very time consuming, and sometimes even dangerous task. When your windows really need a good after-winter cleaning, hiring a professional service to clean your windows is never a bad idea. Lastly, pretty up your outdoor space with some final touches. Spruce it up with potted plants and flowers, comfy patio cushions, pillows, and an outdoor rug. This will create a warm and inviting area for entertaining all summer long!

So Much To Do, So Little Time

With our busy work schedules and commitments with family and friends, there just never seems to be enough time in the day. The last thing we want to be spending our free time doing is cleaning our house, but that’s often what we end up doing anyways. That’s why we’re sharing with you some cleaning hacks to help save you time. Work smarter, not harder, and get back to doing the things you enjoy, while still having a clean & healthy home.

Cleaning Your Mattress
On average, humans spend about 227,468 hours of their life sleeping. That’s 26 years total, and a lot of time spent on your mattress. So, when was the last time you cleaned yours? Odds are it could use a refresh. We recommend having your mattress professionally cleaned every year if you can. In the meantime, sprinkle some baking soda on it, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, and then vacuum it up.

Cleaning Your Dishwasher
Did you know that the dishwasher is one of the dirtiest appliances in your home? That’s because we just often neglect to clean them, but think of all the dirty dishes that have sat inside there. So give your dishwasher a good cleaning, and it’s pretty quick and easy too! Remove the bottom rack from your dishwasher, and sprinkle in some baking soda. Use a cleaning brush to scrub inside. Pour 1 cup of vinegar into the bottom (Never pour any soap in your dishwasher or you will have a big mess on your hands). Run the hottest, and longest cycle you have. And done!

Cleaning Your Microwave
It’s always best to wipe down your microwave after you use it, but sometimes we forget and food splatters and stains get caked inside and it can be hard to get off. Add lemon juice and water in a bowl, run the microwave for 3 minutes, then let it sit for 10 minutes. Afterwards you should be able to easily wipe off any grime.

Reducing Dirt and Dust
Do you feel like you're constantly dusting your home? No one wants to be spending time every week dusting their house. If you don't already, make sure you have doormats at all entrances of your home. It’s not a bad idea to implement a “NO SHOES'' rule in the house, so your guests aren't tracking dirt in with them. Another easy task is to change your furnace's air filter every 6 months. We’d also recommend having your air ducts cleaned. This will get rid of allergens, dust, and dirt that are being blown around your home. That layer of dust you’re finding every week could just be a dirty HVAC system.

Cleaning Your Blinds
Sometimes using a regular duster to clean blinds just isn't enough. You'll spend all afternoon dusting, and still be left with dirty looking blinds An easy way to get them clean AND  finally put those socks with no match to good use, is to wear a sock on your hand and use that to wipe off the blinds. Spray some multi-purpose on the sock too if you want to give it a good wipe.

Cleaning Your Bathtub
Cleaning the bathtub can be a pretty time consuming chore. Sometimes even after scrubbing, for what feels like forever,  it still just isn't enough to give it the cleanliness you’re looking for. Once you’re done wiping it with a bathroom cleaner of your choice, try using a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Seriously, those things can be a life-saver and a time-saver, and it should help with getting rid of the grime ring that forms around the bathtub without putting in all the elbow grease.

What Is Air Duct Cleaning?

2/18/2021

Picture
This is a question we get asked a lot. While commonly referred to as air duct cleaning, another term would be HVAC cleaning and restoration. HVAC stands for heating, ventilation,  and air conditioning. The HVAC system helps with temperature control and humidity levels by regulating air movement in your home. Air duct cleaning helps maximize your homes comfort, and efficiency of your HVAC system with regular proper maintenance.

How Mark’s Cleaning Service Cleans Air Ducts

Air Duct Cleaning Estimate

It’s important to have a certified technician inspect your system before cleaning. That’s why we offer free no commitment estimates. First the technician will evaluate your system including supply & return duct work using our telescopic camera. This will help us determine the best way to clean your duct work and the equipment to use. Once the estimate is completed we will schedule an appointment.

Air Duct Cleaning Process

Our Ram Air duct cleaning system uses compressed air and truck mounted vacuums to thoroughly clean ducts. We will enter each individual vent register with a compressed air line and separate vacuum line. We attach our truck mounted vacuum line to your vent register and the compressed air line is then snaked through the same air duct until it reaches your furnace, this creates pressure within the vent.  Compressed air and soft whips agitate debris and dust from the duct walls. The pressure from our vacuum carries the particles out to our truck.

Air Duct Completion

Once complete, our technician will make a final inspection to assure that the air duct is thoroughly cleaned. Then we will clean up and leave your home exactly as we found it. Leaving behind only clean air ducts so that you and your family can enjoy your new improved indoor air quality.

There are multiple benefits that come with a professional air duct cleaning. You will improve your indoor air quality and reduce allergens in your home. Remember that your HVAC system is in charge of the air that you and your family are breathing. In addition, air duct cleaning helps you to save money. When contaminants and dirt builds up in your HVAC system it makes the system have to work harder and consume more energy. It could also shorten the life of your system. Our team is happy to answer any questions you may have about our duct cleaning process.

It's a new year and a time that many of us are planning out the projects we want to get done this year. One annual project that should be on everyone's to do list is deep cleaning your carpet. We all know carpet is expensive, so it's important to maintain it the best we can. With a little bit of dedication you can keep your carpet in top shape for many years. Experts suggest that carpet is professionally cleaned every 12 months, and even more often in a home with pets and children. So what should you do for the rest of the year between professional cleanings?

  •  Vacuum Regularly
Dirt and debris could cause damage to your carpet, so vacuuming once a week is the best way to keep your carpet clean.
  • Treat Stains As They Happen
When you see a stain or spill on the carpet take action right away. Apply your cleaner of choice (vinegar and club soda works great on stains) and gently blot with a cleaning rag. Be sure to never rub a stain, it will only rub it more into the carpets fiber.
  •  No Shoes In the House
This is an easy way to prevent dirt from tracking into your home, so leave the shoes at the door.

When it's time to give your carpet its annual deep cleaning, leave it to the professionals. Our certified technicians use the latest technology to give your carpet the care it needs. Visit our carpet cleaning page to learn more, or give us a call and speak with one of our knowledgeable team members.

Inexpensive Easy Ways to Prevent Floods

In Northeast, Ohio, storms are inevitable and we often get high winds from very big tropical storms! Hurricane season is here and it brings damaging rain from strong storms down south! At Mark’s Cleaning Service, we are always prepared for catastrophic events and ready to answer your call with an immediate response. Here are some safe, inexpensive tips you can follow considering you are a homeowner and minimize losses to your home:

-Cover Your AC Unit During a Major Storm
It’s smart to cover your AC unit during a strong storm to prevent flying debris caused by wind damage. Using trash bags or tarp to cover your AC unit can trap moisture inside your unit

-Protect Your Windows and Doors
If you do not have storm shutters, stock up on plywood in advance. In the likely event of a major storm happens;
cover all windows as well as glass doors with shutters or plywood.

-Keep Downspouts and Gutters Clear
It is very important to note that flooding in the home is caused by clogged gutters and downspouts can often lead to overflow around your homes foundation.

-Seal Doors and Windows
Any loose doors and windows that leak water can cause mold growth and water damage. Properly sealing doors and windows is an easy and affordable measure to take.

These inexpensive measures can be taken to drastically decrease the chance of flooding. However, water damage can happen unexpectedly and at Mark’s Cleaning Service we always are on standby 24/7 to take your call at 330-350-1293. Your damage becomes our top priority and our knowledgeable certified technicians assist you in any way possible to dry out your home.
